Hey All,

Does anyone know to program a new key on a 2001 E-class? And will any Smart key work or do I need a key with the same frequency? And if so, how do I find the ID or freq?

Hi,

A key from MB should be pre programmed for the vehicles drive authorisation system, assuming you gave the chassis and/or engine number details when you ordered the the key, so it should not be necessary to programme the key to start the engine.

The key may need to be programmed to lock and unlock the vehicle however, if this has not been done by the dealer (its usually done by hooking up to a laptop using the diagnostics programme) and it is is possible to do this without the need to visit a dealer.

To programme the key yourself to lock/unlock the vehicle, I'm assured that the following procedure will work:

1. Insert the key in the ignition switch a turn to position 2 (dash lights on, but don't start the engine) then back to position 1.

2. Remove the key from the ignition switch then within 60 secs press and hold the fob's LOCK button and whilst holding it down press and realese the fob's UNLOCK button five consecutive times.

3. Still within the 60 secs time limit release the fob's LOCK button and press and release any button on the fob.

The rolling code should now be synchronised and the fob should now work with the car.
