:?: Has anyone experienced creaks, rattles and groans coming from the roof when it is up and what was done to stop it? My 2005 SL55 with 1,800 miles on it does all the above and is more pronounced when the car is turned or goes over a bump. There is also a creaking sound when I start to move the car . It truly does sound like something is loose.
Thanks,
Lou

Although I haven't experienced this problem, I have heard about noisy sun roofs. This sounds like more of a SL specific issue though. Have you talked to MB service about it yet? I'd bring it in. I expect creaks, rattles and groans in a 20k american car, not in a Mercedes, and especially not in an SL55 AMG.

Gasp! Another SL on this forum. Welcome.
I took my SLK32 in for that problem and they sprayed some type of lube on the plastic parts that rubbed against each other, and the noises went away. I don't have any problems with my SL55, yet. Knock on wood. I would second the dealer visit.

:D I got my car back today. They worked on it for 2 days and were able to get it perfectly quiet. What really pleased me was that the service advisor called me frequently to give me updates. What truly amazed me was how much the service and overall attitude of this dealer has changed. The dealer is Mercedes of Sacramento and was bought by an auto group about a year ago. A little over a year ago I vowed that I would never deal with them again. Amazing what a change in management will do.

I have a similar problem. What did they do?

Welcome to AMG Power. Do you have the same problem? Mine has the same problem and will go in when I can part with it. The weather is just too darn nice to have my SL stuck in the shop. Winter will be comming to New England soon enough.

They lubricated every moving joint in the top and trunk mechanism and re-tightened all nuts and bolts. On another post somebody said that they rotated the rubber stops on the trunk lid. You will see a black rubber cylinder that keeps the trunk from moving side to side on the trunk mechanism that is somewhat flat on 2 both sides. They said rotating them slightly made the noise go away.

I took my SL in for the roof creak/rattle and the car is all set now. On the way back I had a little fun with some sort of Mitsi with a coffee can tail pipe.
Hi,
I too had a creaky roof (understatement!!) on my SL55, it's taken me a few fixes to get it sorted.
The rubber seals need lubrication occasionally with some "special" MB sun roof lubricant - expensive stuff (£25 for 10ml!). This reduced the first batch of noise.
Next came a slightly loose bearing retaining bolt on one of the joints, tightened and lube fixed that.
Next problem was alignment of the front locking mechanism, some shims required (not done yet) plus some lubrication. This fixed a major "cracking" sound from this part of the roof.
I would say this lot removed 95% of the roof rattles on my SL55.
All of these are documented in the MB WIS service DVD's.
I think I can live with the minor noises which remain as I think it is probably not realistic to get a totally silent roof when you consider the compexity of the structure.
BigH.
